Data Breach Recovery Service
Comprehensive support to Australian businesses, offering expert guidance and practical solutions to quickly and effectively recover from data breaches, ensuring minimal disruption and enhanced future security.
Who is the Data Breach Recovery Service for?
The Data Breach Recovery Service is designed for any Australian business, regardless of size or industry, that has experienced a data breach or is seeking to bolster its preparedness for potential incidents. This service is crucial for organisations that handle sensitive information, including financial institutions, healthcare providers, retail companies, and tech firms. It is also invaluable for small to medium-sized enterprises that may lack the in-house expertise to effectively manage and mitigate the fallout from a data breach. By leveraging a Data Breach Recovery Service, businesses can minimise downtime, protect their reputation, ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and implement robust security measures to prevent future breaches.
How the Data Breach Recovery Service works
Holocron Cyber uses an easy 4 phase methodology for recovering from a data breach:
Phase 1: Assessment and Containment
The critical first phase in responding to a data breach. This phase begins with an initial consultation to understand the specific nature of the breach, followed by a thorough assessment to evaluate the extent of the impact. Immediate actions are taken to contain the breach, which involves isolating affected systems to prevent further unauthorised access or data loss. The goal is to quickly stabilise the situation and prevent the breach from escalating while gathering crucial information to guide subsequent actions.
Phase 2: Eradication and Recovery
Focuses on identifying and eliminating the root cause of the breach to ensure it does not recur. This phase includes a detailed root cause analysis to understand how the breach occurred and what vulnerabilities were exploited. Any malicious software or tools used by the attackers are removed. Following eradication, efforts shift to recovery, where lost or compromised data is restored from backups, and affected systems are rebuilt and securely reconfigured. This phase aims to return the business to normal operations as quickly and safely as possible.
Phase 3: Configuration Review and Recommended Actions
Involves a thorough examination of the organisation's existing security configurations and policies. This phase identifies any gaps or weaknesses in the current setup that may have contributed to the breach. Based on this review, specific recommendations are provided to enhance security measures and prevent future incidents. This can include updating security patches, improving system configurations, and implementing additional security controls. The objective is to fortify the organisation's defences against similar breaches in the future.
Phase 4: Post-Incident Review and Improvement
The final phase, focusing on learning from the breach to enhance future resilience. This phase includes a comprehensive review of the breach incident to document what happened, how it was handled, and the effectiveness of the response actions. A detailed report is generated, highlighting key findings and lessons learned. Based on the recommended actions, discussions are had around the implementation of future systems or programs to ensure ongoing protection and readiness for future incidents.
The Anatomy of a Data Breach
Unravelling the complex layers of a data breach to understand its origins,
impact, and resolution.
How a Data Breach Occurs
To steal data from an organisation, malicious cyber actors will commonly exploit online services and internet-facing devices, or penetrate a network’s perimeter using stolen or easily guessed credentials. Once inside a network, malicious actors will often attempt to escalate their privileges, move laterally across the network to find data to steal and/or other systems to exploit, and then attempt to exfiltrate data back through the network perimeter.
DON’T LEAVE YOUR CYBER SECURITY TO CHANCE
The risks of doing nothing can be devastating
As cyber attacks continue to increase and evolve, it is important to understand what impacts these may have on your organisation. A successful cyber attack can interrupt your business operations while a data breach can incur heavy fines from regulators and damage your business’ reputation.
Major disruption to business operations
Large penalties from ASIC
Reputational damage
Loss of access to critical systems and data
Diving Deeper Into Data Breaches
The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) conducted a detailed analysis of data breaches between November 2021 and October 2022. Analysis revealed the average amount of data reported to be exfiltrated during a breach was 120 gigabytes, with the highest reported amount being 870 gigabytes. The graph below outlines the top information types exposed during a breach.
During the same period, 41 per cent of data breaches involved malicious cyber actors exploiting valid accounts and credentials to access cloud services, local systems, or entire networks. Malicious cyber actors commonly used brute-force attacks to take advantage of simple and re-used passwords to access accounts, or used phishing to obtain credentials.
Around 34 per cent of data breaches involved exploitation of internet-facing applications. Common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs) were often exploited, and so was human misconfiguration of devices like unsecured application programming interfaces, or common bugs and flaws in software; for example, insecure direct object references.
